CHAPTER 5: GEOMORPHOLOGY AND LARGE SCALE DEVELOPMENTS

CHAP 5: GEOMORPHOLOGIE ET GRANDS AMENAGEMENTS

This chapter examines the problems arising from road construction and urban or industrial development. Examples throughout the world are given, that show evaluation criteria connected directly or indirectly with geomorphology. A description is presented of the organization of the studies carried out at two levels: (1) preliminary studies conducted with a view to preparing decisions concerning the selection of road alignment (e.g. research on nuisances, constraints, solifluction of a catchment area, geotechnical mapping, special geomorphological maps, etc); (2) studies for the realisation of the plans. Examples demonstrate general methodological aspects (among the 2 cases of roads resulting in the instability of a catchment area). An extensive bibliography is appended. (TRRL)
