An attempt is made to place reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges in the context of present bridge construction. Reinforced concrete bridges are classified according to their shapes (straight bridges, arch bridges and bowstring bridges) and their function. In Part 2 a detailed analysis is presented of arch bridges, suspension bridges and of the current regulations as regards concrete bridges. A comparison is made of the behaviour of open section bridges and closed section bridges under eccentric loads. Aesthetic aspects are discussed together with the resistance of concrete to slow deformations occurring in long-span bridges. The various bridge construction methods are examined: precast concrete or cast-in-situ concrete bridges. Costs of scaffolding are quoted. (TRRL)
