TRAFFIC STUDIES IN THE FOURVIERE TUNNEL

ETUDES DE TRAFIC DU TUNNEL SOUS FOURVIERE

The author describes an investigation into the relation between parameters specific to the tunnel, the geometry of accesses to the tunnel and traffic flow characteristics. The first series of results led to the study of traffic flow conditions in some sections of the tunnel and to the establishment of a mathematical formula expressing the flow-average speed curve, which is fairly reliable taking account of the very large number of points where measurements were taken. The results show that the phenomena observed in tunnels are similar to those in the open air, e.g, congested traffic flow is represented by A single curve while the characteristics of flowing traffic are functions of numerous parameters such as gradient, percentage of heavy vehicles, geometry of the structure, and geometry of access roads.
