EFFECT OF PRICE HIKE ON FUEL CONSUMPTION BY MOTOR VEHICLES IN DELHI

Following the sharp increase in the price of crude oil by the O.P.E.C., India had to face unprecedented setback in its progress in the sphere of growing automobile industry in particular and other modes of transport in general. To stem the rising import of crude oil, India had to resort to the drastic action of steeply increasing the price of petroleum and some of its products. This measure no doubt proved to be a success in reducing the imported oil but with detrimental effect on the operation and growth of road transport. The present Paper is an attempt in finding out the impact of hike in oil price on the usage of motor vehicles in Delhi. By making a comparative study of extent of travelling, consumption of petroleum products and expenses incurred both before and after the price hike, it is hoped to correctly analyse the implications of hike in oil prices. The Paper also contains suggestions for future action. (Author)
