LABORATORY AND FIELD STUDIES ON LIME-FLYASH STABILISATION OF DIFFERENT SOILS WITH BOTH HYDRAULIC AND NON-HYDRAULIC TYPES OF FLY ASH

This Paper deals with the results of the laboratory investigation on the stabilisation of different soils with lime-flyash--using fly ash of both hydraulic and non-hydraulic types. Investigations showed that the alluvial soils could be satisfactorily stabilised with both hydraulic and non-hydraulic types of flyash, whereas black-cotton soil with non-hydraulic type of fly ash showed limited improvement. Results with red soil and hydraulic type of fly ash showed that it could be satisfactorily stabilised both with fly ash alone and lime-fly ash. Their differential pozzolanic behaviour was observed to be due to the difference in their mineralogical composition, granulometry and fineness. Remarkable inprovement with hydraulic type of fly ash was due to the formation of more CSH(I) of tobermorite type and C4AH13 as reaction products, which resulted owing to higher amounts of soluble silica and CaO content. Based on laboratory investigations, a number of experimental stretches were laid on National Highway and rural roads in Haryana and Orissa. Their performance is satisfactory to-date. (Author)
