STUDDED TYRES OF PASSENGER CARS AND LORRIES DURING THE WINTER 1977-78

LIIKENTEESSA OLEVIEN HENKILO- JA KUORMA-AUTOJEN NASTARENKAAT TALVIKAUDELLA 1977-78

The investigation clarified, during the winter season 1977-78, the prevalence and modes of use of studded tyres as well as stud protrusions, stud forces, number of studs and other stud and tyre parameters in studded tyres used in traffic. The measurements and observations were made on cars halted on highways in different locations in Finland. On the average 92% of cars used studded tyres. The stud protrusion was 1,1 mm on the average and the stud force 156n. In studded friction tyres the stud force was, because of greater stud protrusion, 10n higher on the average than in the other studded tyres. The type acceptance required studded tyres since autumn 1976 to have reduced stud forces and protrusions, but has at the same time increased the service life of studded tyres. In trucks studded tyres are usually used only on the front axle. The use of studded tyres varied considerably regionally and according to the intended use of the truck. It was 33% in southern Finland and 79% in northern Finland. On tankers transporting fuel and on delivery vehicles, the use of studs was clearly more common than in other use groups. (TRRL)
