The Government of New South Wales in Australia has undertaken an expansion program for Port Kembla Coal Loading Facility to increase the annual throughput from 6 MTPY to some 20 MTPY. A coal dust suppression system was incorporated in the design to suppress coal dust at the transfer as well as to maintain stockpile surface moisture, so as to prevent dust from being carried into the neighboring towns. All conveyors and equipment will be installed in enclosed areas with a washdown concept. However, the major mobile machines such as stackers, reclaimers and shiploaders will be provided with enclosures as much as possible. The dust suppression spray, washdown and drainage water will be collected in settling ponds prior to discharge into the harbor. The dust suppression system introduces considerable moisture in the coal, making it sticky and requiring special design concepts to be incorporated in the bulk material handling system.
