The feasibility of placing a liquefied natural gas receiving terminal on the continental shelf in the Eastern Santa Barbara Channel in California was investigated by performing the conceptual design of a North Sea type Condeep terminal at a specific site approximately 10 miles off Carpinteria (Pitas Point). Recognizing the differences between the North Sea and the Santa Barbara Channel site, emphasis was placed on documenting the safety of the terminal when subjected to significant sesimic loads. The investigation concludes that the condeep terminal concept constitutes both a feasible and safe solution at the proposed location.
