DESIGN OF SHIP STEERING AUTOPILOTS BY QUADRATIC SYNTHESIS

A description is given of the use of quadratic synthesis methods to design a steering autopilot which not only regulates heading, but also increases roll damping and minimizes fuel consumption for operation at a given speed. The quadratic synthesis method is particularly effective when applied to the minimum fuel consumption problem since it is possible to approximately express consumption as a function which is quadratic in the state variables in the ship's lateral equations of motion.
