RHINE CONTAINER TRAFFIC -- ON A RISING TIDE
Although there have been container barge services operating on the Rhine for more than a decade, it is only in the last few years that the barge system has emerged as a serious competitor to the road and rail transport modes. Rising fuel oil and labor costs, together with rail and road congestion and a range of other factors are all contributing to the steady rise in status of the barge as a container carrier and to spur the development of infrastructure essential to its operation. The network of container barge services now in operation is extensive and seems set for further expansion.
