PLASTIC COATINGS: AN ANSWER TO SHIPBOARD CORROSION

Most ships in use today have a considerable amount of pipework in varying shapes and sizes which can suffer from serious corrosion and erosion problems; these problems alone can affect the profitable operation of the ship. Corrosion in ships' piping is caused mainly by salt water, although this is by no means the only aggressive fluid to create difficulties. The author briefly discusses the use of PVC coatings on marine pipework, giving the examples which demonstrate the corrosion resistance afforded to mild steel by plastic coating.
