THE PROVISION OF PROTECTION FOR RESIDENTIAL AREAS

FORDERUNG NACH WOHNSCHUTZ

Because of increases in traffic, the diversion of traffic from choked main highways and diversions resulting from constructional measures, traffic nuisance increases in residential roads. In a residential area in Zurich, because of the existing structure of the highway network, measures were taken by the police to alter the road network by means of oneway street regulations, prohibitions on turning and through traffic, and the introduction of cul-de-sacs and parking bans, in order to keep out the traffic which uses this area only as a short cut. The author discusses critically the experiences gained with these measures and reports particularly on the various responses from the population affected by the measures. It is necessary that priority be given to traffic restraint rather than traffic flow. (TRRL)
