PRELIMINARY RESEARCH PRIOR TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF NEW REGULATIONS GOVERNING HARD STEEL FOR PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

RECHERCHES PRELIMINAIRES A UNE REGLEMENTATION NOUVELLE DES ACIERS DURS POUR BETON PRECONTRAINT

This paper reviews acceptance tests for batches of hard steel prestressing wire. The tests measure both the strength characteristics of the wire and fatigue characteristics. After reviewing the notion of fatigue, the "kamatometer" apparatus is described, used for rotation bending tests. A method is presented for the "measurement of internal fault density" of a steel wire based on the kamatometer results. However, as shown by modern physics, fatigue susceptibility develops largely from surface faults and not internal faults. The kamatometer nevertheless allows fatigue susceptibility due to surface notches and cracks to be measured and remedial measures to be found. Electrochemical and corrosion effects on fatigue strength of hard steel wires have also been studied. (TRRL)
