PLASTICIZED CONCRETE IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION

LE BETON FLUIDE DANS LA CONSTRUCTION ROUTIERE

Plasticized concrete is now widely used. The addition of a plasticizer modifies the nature of the concrete so as to allow correct laying without having to use heavy equipment while conforming to required strength standards. Initial formulae are not very different from those of traditional concrete and nearly all standardized types of cement are suitable. The fines content must be kept at a minimum. Plasticizers are of 4 different types, synthetic or natural. The air-entraining agent must be adapted to the nature of the plasticizer. The article describes the manufacturing process, method of transport and laying of plasticized concrete, the action of the plasticizer taking effect only a short time before laying. Concrete must be covered with curing product. The strength of plasticized concrete is comparable to that of conventional concrete but laying and compaction are easier. This paper was presented at the International Symposium on Rigid Pavements, Besancon, 25-27 September 1978. (TRRL)
