THE COMPLEMENTARY ASPECT, COMPETITION AND SPECIALIZATION OF TRANSPORT MODES

COMPLEMENTARITE, CONCURRENCE ET SPECIALISATION DES TRANSPORTS

The road and railway networks in Africa are highly inadequate: they are not sufficiently dense, are ill-matched and sometimes non-existent in certain countries. An effort is being made to develop air transport but the equipment is insufficient, and freight/mile and passenger/mile costs slow its expansion. Water transport carries 90% of the freight. 97,5% of companies are not African. Another problem is the congestion of harbours. A better utilization of each transport mode must be sought.
