WEATHER CRITERIA FOR MARINE OPERATIONS, WITH SPECIAL EMPHASIS ON TOWING OPERATIONS
Present procedures for determining weather criteria for marine operations, particularly towing operations, have been reviewed and found inadequate. Potential substitutes are discussed and it is concluded that for operations lasting longer than 5 days a storm approach should be employed to take into account the tendency for extreme environmental characteristics to occur in "bursts". For shorter operations, weather forecasts and transition/duration statistics should be used.
