DEVELOPMENT OF MITSUBISHI-SULZER 8RLA90 DIESEL ENGINE

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has been producing Mitsubishi-Sulzer diesel engines for many years. They recently completed the 8RLA90 engine as the world's first production unit of the RLA90 engine series which has a lower speed and a longer stroke than the currently produced RND-M engines. The engine achieved satisfactory results from various kinds of tests and specifically succeeded in reducing fuel consumption. The tests included a turbo charger matching test, fuel injection system matching test, temperature and stress measuring tests, vibration and noise measuring tests, and some special tests for fuel consumption reduction. The main specifications of the new engine and the results of special tests are briefly introduced in this paper.
