The importance of correct balancing in the design and manufacture of ships' propellers is emphasised, especially in the case of those which are too heavy to be weighed on a conventional mechanical weighbridge. In an attempt to simplify this problem, the Lips propeller works in Holland have developed a combined balancing/weighing machine which uses Philips industrial measuring equipment during the various phases of propeller production. The design and operation of the equipment, which is particularly valuable for balancing the hubs of controllable-pitch propellers, is described in detail in this article and is supported by a wealth of data in the form of graphs and diagrams. Order from BSRA as No. 54,171.
