Predictors of Readiness for Mobility Transition in Older Drivers

The Assessment of Readiness for Mobility Transition (ARMT) was administered by the authors to 301 older drivers, and the total scores were compared with participant characteristics. While, overall, 19% of participants were very ready, in terms of attitude, for mobility transition, 18% were not. In particular, participants who had been hospitalized in the past year were either not ready at all for mobility transition (30% vs 17% without hospitalizations) or very ready (20% vs 14%). Reactions towards mobility transition may be polarized by significant health events. Such differing views could be addressed by individualizing communication about driving cessation readiness. ARMT could be used in mobility transition counseling interventions in order to further evaluate its effectiveness.
