WINTER CONCRETING. THIRD EDITION
The report gives advice on precautions necessary when placing concrete during freezing or near-freezing weather conditions. After describing the nature of frost damage to concrete, during the period when it is plastic and that following first stiffening, a method of classifying contracts is suggested according to the scale of winter concreting precautions planned. The frost safety level of concrete is defined and methods of ensuring when concrete has reached this stage are given in terms of maturity and strength. Recommendations are given concerning heated concrete, formwork insulation, heated enclosures, special cements and accelerating admixtures. Further sections deal with the curing of concrete in winter and the striking of formwork. (TRRL)
