UNDERSTANDING BY ADULTS OF ROAD TRAFFIC AND SAFETY TERMS
The paper briefly describes the results of a survey carried out among adults to test their comprehension of 171 terms. Lists of terms understood by (a) less than 1 in 2, (b) less than 1 in 3 and (C) less than 1 in 5 of adults are given. There was little difference between results from different parts of the country. Drivers were somewhat better than non-drivers. The author points out that all those who are concerned with safety should be aware of the problem of communication and should guard against the use of language which their audience may not comprehend.
