EXPERIENCE WITH GUARDED BICYCLE PARKING IN THE CITY CENTRE OF EINDHOVEN

ERVARINGEN MET EN BEWAAKTE FIETSENSTALLING IN HET CENTRUM VAN EINDHOVEN

The number of bicycles which are stolen every day becomes more and more alarming. In 1977 4900 bicycles were stolen in eindhoven only, of which 30% were in the city centre. The task of local government is to aim at reduction of this number by, for instance, creating guarded parking places. Forecasting the actual performance of such places is difficult and therefore it is very useful to give them a trial. This article gives a summary of the evaluation of such a trial. It deals with a number of elements such as the demand for guarded bicycle parking, the influence on modal split, the duration of parking, the frequency of visits to the centre, turn-over, etc. A couple of important results are: (1) 71% of people visiting the city centre by bicycle consider this parking system as necessary; (2) guarded parking places have an influence on modal split and stimulate bicycle usage.
