CONTROLLING EMPLOYEE ABSENTEEISM

This paper discusses various methods of discouraging absenteeism. The most critical factor of control is an accurate and complete attendance record for each employee. Examples of attendance record forms are illustrated as well as a formula for computing the absence rate. Establishment of an attendance policy is considered essential. It should be a clear disciplinary policy on absenteeism that: is known to the employees, is applied thoroughly and consistently, and warns employees that they face discipline or discharge for unsatisfactory attendance. Another method of controlling the level of illness related absences is to establish exacting procedures to make the employee realize that the company is very much concerned about each illness. The employee should be required to notify the supervisor of the reason s/he will be absent and when s/he is expected to return, and the supervisor should know where the employee can be located while off work if other than at home and advise the employee that a supervisor may visit to inquire whether additional help or medical attention is needed. Other methods of control are: counseling sessions, rewards for good performance, and presence of a company doctor.
