SAFETY ASSESSMENT ON FATIGUE STRENGTH OF MEMBRANE COMPONENTS IN LNG STORAGE TANKS AND LNG CARRIERS

Safety assessment of fatigue strength is one of the main subjects in the technology of the construction of LNG tanks. Fatigue design of membrane barrier has been a completed technology for LNG carriers on the basis of numerous fatigue tests and long experiences in real ships. However, the range of use of the membrane is yet increasing to the construction of in-ground storage tanks, deeper and larger. This paper presents some of the results in fatigue tests, which were performed for the purpose of confirming the additional safety after the crack initiation. Discussions are directed to general features of fatigue crack growth, and to the design curve referring to ASME which may be used in severe conditions in in-ground storage tanks as requested by Japanese regulation.
