Guidelines for Detection and Remediation of Soluble Salt Contamination Prior to Coating Steel Highway Structures

This report presents practical means and methods for the effective detection and remediation of soluble salt contamination on highway steel structures. After a brief background on soluble salts, the document presents information as responses to a series of practical questions that an inspector, contractor, or designer may pose. This guideline also contains four appendices: a copy of The Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) Technology Guide 15, Field Methods for Extraction and Analysis of Soluble Salts on Steel and Other Nonporous Substrates; and three topical training materials for soluble salt detection and remediation in the form of annotated PowerPoint slides.
