BOOM STACKERS AND RECLAIMERS - STABILITY INFLUENCES SELECTION AND DESIGN

Although boom stackers, reclaimers and combined stacker/reclaimers are subject to on-going improvement programmes in terms of design and construction these machines are perhaps, the most widely established equipment for bulk stockyard rehandling. With one survey identifying almost 800 boom stacking or reclaiming units world-wide outside of the Comecon bloc it can be seen that an overall market confidence exists in the design and operational efficiency of such units. Nevertheless research into factors such as design stability, maintenance procedures and overall selection criteria continues. This article looks at some of these and is based on opinions expressed by a large number of world-wide manufacturers, consultants and users.
