This report reviews the history of the bicylce and its use in Ireland. The advantages and disadvantages of using a bicycle are discussed with accident rates for cars, bicycles and motorcycles. The author examines cycleways in other European countries, particularly the Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. Bicycle travel in Galway City is dealt with under the research carried out on traffic accidents, vehicle kilometres by mode of travel and cycle routes. The author concludes that bicycle usage should be encouraged as an energy conservation measure as it is a viable alternative mode of travel for journeys up to 3 miles for work trips and up to 2 miles for school trips.
