Implementation of Actibumps on Curtin University campus

Actibump is a dynamic traffic safety system that creates safe and calm traffic. It only affects speeding traffic, allowing for even traffic flow and full access for buses and emergency vehicles. If the speed of an oncoming vehicle is above the set speed limit a hatch is lowered a few centimetres into the road surface, giving the speeding driver a reminder of the speed limit. Vehicles driven at the legal speed pass on a level road without discomfort. Four Actibumps were installed on Curtin University campus in December 2017. University Boulevard was the chosen road for the installation, which takes over 4000 vehicles per day with a speed limit of 40kph. Pre installation data showed about 70% of the traffic at speeding levels. This paper reports on the trial of the selective speed management system Actibump at Curtin University, including the before and after data on speeds and traffic.
