CROSSING BY THE A15 MOTORWAY OF THE GYPSUM WORKINGS ON THE BUTTE D'ORGEMONT IN ARGENTEUIL

FRANCHISSEMENT PAR L'AUTOROUTE A15 DES EXPLOITATIONS DE GYPSE DE LA BUTTE D'ORGEMONT A ARGENTEUIL

The application of the directives laid down in the volume "recommendations for the geological and geotechnical investigation of motorway alignments" (LCPC 1967) does not give rise to any particular problem for alignments in open country. But for motorway alignments in urban or suburban environment the situation is different. The essential steps of the planning of such projects are not always taken in the order they should, as the ground where the road is being built is often selected without any considerations of geotechnical nature. Furthermore alignments are often located in sites which have been extensively modified, those modifications being the result not only of natural phenomena but also of man-made interventions. This article describes a geotechnical study of this type; study of the difficulties encountered in a section of the a15 motorway in the northern suburbs of Paris. This study illustrates some layout problems resulting from the presence of gypsum-bearing sites. Details are given of the geology of the site, survey procedures dictated by the geometric characteristics and complex geotechnical nature of the site. Construction problems and provisions are outlined. (TRRL)
