CORROSION OF REINFORCED AND PRESTRESSED CONCRETE MARINE STRUCTURES

CORROSION A LA MER DE STRUCTURES EN BETON ARME ET PRECONTRAINT

An extensive programme of in situ tests on the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures subject to the action of seawater was initiated in 1962 by CEBTRP. Two sites were chosen; one in the Atlantic Ocean, up to 1976, using beams resting on sand in the Rance Estuary in the tidal zone, and later in an installation of the Brittany Oceanological Centre at Sainte-Anne-du-Portzic; the other in the Mediterranean, with partial submergence in the experimental area of the seawall of the port of Marseilles. After fourteen years experiments, certain observations of particular interest for the behaviour of reinforced concrete marine structures have been accumulated, principally for the mediterranean site. The results of this research are presented, which show two essential factors ruling the phenomena: concrete cover of the reinforcement and cement content. (TRRL)
