DETERMINATION OF THE IN SITU PERMEABILITY OF BASES AND SUBBASES

This article discusses the development and evaluation of the field permeability testing device (FPTD), a prototype in situ test device for determining the permeability of highway bases and subbases. The prototype device, based on the velocity method of in situ permeability determination, was evaluated extensively in the laboratory and field. Based on these evaluation results, it was concluded that the prototype FPTD satisfied stipulated performance criteria and provided a convenient, accurate, and reproducible means for determining the in situ coefficient of permeability of highway bases and subbases.
