LEGISLATURES FACE REVENUE SHORTFALLS; SEEK NEW SOURCES OF HIGHWAY INCOME
This article is the second in a series on state-by-state legislative action during 1979 directly affecting the operations of the individual highway departments. Inflation combined with diminishing gas tax revenues has resulted in severe money shortages for virtually every highway department in the nation. What has been done at the state level, what the needs are, and what is hoped to be accomplished in creating more money for road, street and bridge rehabilitation and maintenance during 1980 provide the main theme of these reports.
