MATERIAL DISPLACEMENT IN THE VICINITY OF EMBANKMENTS BUILT ON COMPRESSIBLE SOIL. FORECASTING METHOD

DEPLACEMENTS LATERAUX A PROXIMITE DES REMBLAIS SUR SOLS COMPRESSIBLES - METHODE DE PREVISION

The soil lateral displacement at the foot of the embankments built on compressible soil causes considerable bending stresses on piles driven in the vicinity of the embankment. A method of calculating these stresses exists already: it requires a knowledge of the free displacement of the soil (displacement when there is no pile) which, up to now, it was not possible to forecast. This study is based on numerous lateral displacement measurements made at the foot of embankments built on compressible soil over the past fifteen years. The analysis of the results enables the influence of the geometric and mechanical parameters of the embankment/compressible layer system and that of the time to be determined. Using the results of this analysis, a simple empirical method is proposed to predict the free displacements of the soil at the end of construction and their evolution during the consolidation of the compressible layer.
