IS A HELICOPTER AMBULANCE PROFITABLE?

AER AMBULANSHELIKOPTER LOENSAM? EN TEORETISK SAMHAELLSEKONOMISK STUDIE

An earlier article (Laekartidningen 76:4243-4252 1979) described the ambulance service operated in the County of Oerebro - the Oerebro County Council Ambulance Service - which incorporates both Swedish and international experience. A theoretical study of the potential profitability of a helicopter ambulance, proposes to supplement this service with a helicopter ambulance stationed at the regional hospital in oerebro and crewed by a nurse and a doctor. A cost analysis with assessment of the theoretical profitability is presented. Under certain circumstances the project would show a profit if five lives per year were saved. An ambulance helicopter based at the regional hospital in Oerebro would have an operational area covering 28 towns and about 1,2 million people within 30 minutes distance from the base. At the base hospital there are extensive medical resources for highly specialised care and qualified medical treatment. In these circumstances, the authors question whether one an justify not testing a helicopter ambulance service for a trial period. (TRRL)
