THE APPLICATION AND CONTROL OF THE MOTORWAY MATRIX SIGNALLING SYSTEM
The report investigates the effectiveness of the motorway matrix signalling system and also tests by random sampling the attitude and response of motorway users, and police, responsible for motorway control. The report describes the development of matrix signalling systems and evaluates results of questionnaires designed to test the response of the public and police. While drivers were found willing to accept legislation in respect of motorway signs there was criticism concerning the lack of uniformity in their application in particular incidents. Future developments discussed include spacing of signals on motorways and also the inclusion of information indicating the reason for speed limits applied. (TRRL)
