LIQUID HYDROGEN CAR SEES LIGHT OF DAY

This is a brief description of a BMW 518 saloon which DFVLR, the West German aerospace research organisation, with the University of Stuttgart, has modified to run on either petrol or liquid hydrogen. A specially coated aluminium tank and filling point have been developed to overcome the problem of hydrogen storage. Use is made of the car's radiator water for vaporizing the hydrogen, and details are given of fuel injection and combustion. Although hydrogen is not available in large quantities, reference is made to investigations being carried out into its production, economically. (TRRL)
