PREDICTION AND MODEL EXPERIMENTS ON SPEED LOSS OF A SHIP IN WAVES

For the prediction of seakeeping qualities of a ship and the establishment of design criteria for wave loads, it is very important to estimate the ship's speed in rough seas. Speed loss caused by added resistance due to wind and waves is called "nominal speed loss," and its amount is also affected by the main engine characteristics. In this study, the prediction method of nominal speed loss was developed on the basis of ordinary power estimation method for propulsive performance of ships in calm water, taking into account added resistance in waves, propeller characteristics, self-propulsion factors, and the main engine characteristics.
