THE MENTAL PATIENT AS MOTORIST: WHEN IS UNFITNESS TO DRIVE INVOLVED?

The bulk of road traffic accidents are not caused by ill drivers and certainly not by mentally ill drivers. In the German Federal Republic, the Joint Advisory Board for Medical Sciences Relating to Traffic Safety, and the Federal Minister for Youth, Family and Health have defined standards assessing suitability to drive. Some examples bearing on this question are limited for persons dependent on alcohol with personality defects and an inability to regulate alcohol intake. (A)
