PORE WATER PRESSURE CHANGES IN A ROAD EMBANKMENT CARTOGRAPHY

Pore water pressures are monitored in a clay fill road embankment. The instrumentation provides for continuous and automatic monitoring and comprises a "scanivalve" fluid scanning switch used to connect each of 22 tensiometers in turn to a transducer. Results show the importance of precipitation intensity in controlling pore water pressure changes. In addition, the relative responsiveness of the clay fill material to precipitation is shown to be a particularly critical factor in its association with a shallow surface slip occurring during the study period.(a) (TRRL)
