TECHNICAL NOTE. BRAZILIAN TENSILE STRENGTH OF ROCKS WITH DIFFERENT ELASTIC PROPERTIES IN TENSION AND COMPRESSION

It is demonstrated that if the elastic properties of rock in tension are different from those in compression, then the estimation of Brazilian tensile strength by the conventional method could lead to erroneous results. In the note the influence of elastic properties in tension and compression of rocks on the magnitude of principal tensile stress at the centre of a thin circular disk subjected to diametral compression is illustrated. A method is given of estimating the correct Brazilian tensile strength of rocks for which the ratio: modulus of elasticity in tension to modulus of elasticity in compression is known. (TRRL) deterioration on minor roads. Increasing bitumen costs and economic restrictions will lead to developments in maintenance techniques such as recycling of materials and planned maintenance programmes.
