FRENCH WATERWAYS BID FOR CONTAINER TRAFFIC
While the barge might not appear to be the most modern of transport systems, it has recently aroused new interest in France from those involved in inland container movements. A flurry of activity towards the end of 1979 has seen the introduction of new containerbarge services on the Seine and on the Rhone; but, although these are not fully operational yet, the potential of the inland waterway as a competitor to the road and railway is definitely visible. Alongside this activity, there have been developments in the improvement of the canals themselves; dominating this is the announcement that exploratory work is shortly to begin on the construction of a canal to link the North Sea and the Mediterranean.
