Two versatile barge carriers with considerable deck container capacity are now in service between North Europe and west Africa. Built by Thyssen Nordseewerke from the Federal Republic of Germany for a domestic owner each vessel has a maximum deadweight of 21,000 tonnes on a 6.64 m draught and is powered by a B & W 8L55GF low-speed engine developing 10.720 bhp to give a speed of 15 knots at 90 per cent m.c.r. The Baco ships have a container carrying capacity of 648 TEUs per ship and are equipped with their own container handling equipment. The barges are loaded through the bow via a floodable dock hold, divided by a non-watertight longitudinal centerline bulkhead.
