HIGHWAY VISIBILITY RESEARCH NEEDS
This article outlines those aspects of the subject of visibility on the highway that the author feels require further research. These include the effectiveness of reflective clothing for pedestrians, the synergistic effects of prescription drugs on driver vision and congnition, how to improve vehicle conspicuity, luminance and contrast requirements for highway signs, establishing priorities for energy-saving curtailment of roadway lighting, revision of eye height standards to compensate for the increasing number of small cars in use, and the need to develop pavement marking materials that are both more durable and easier to obliterate.
