LIGHT TWO-WHEELED VEHICLES IN URBAN AREAS: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS
LE DUE RUOTE LEGGERE IN AMBIENTE URBANO: PROBLEMI E PROSPETTIVE
In Italy two-wheeled vehicles (cycles, mopeds and motorcycles) total more than 22.5 million units, of which 16 million are bicycles and nearly 5 million are mopeds. These are the two categories considered in this article as light two-wheeled vehicles. It is estimated that cars consume 13 billion litres of fuel per year to account for 70% of national mobility. From this it is calculated that every 1% of mobility transferred from the car to two-wheeled transport would save 150 million litres of fuel per year. This article describes measures used to promote cycling and improve cycling facilities, with specific reference to densely populated urban areas. These measures include slogans and advertising, cycle tracks and lanes, parking, and traffic signs and signals specific to cycles. (TRRL)
