AVALANCHES IN THE FIELD OF ROAD AND RAILWAY ENGINEERING

This article discusses the considerations which affect the choice of avalanche protection measures for roads in mountain areas. These considerations include: the touristic importance of the road and whether or not there are alternative routes; the periodicity, frequency and volume of the avalanche; the starting point of the avalanche, particularly the morphology of the area; and the area of the road impacted by the avalanche. Based upon these considerations the economic advantages of avalanche barriers as opposed to artificial protective tunnels, are discussed. The advantages of barriers described include: low-cost (often salvage) materials, and therefore greater height and length in terms of cost; and the almost total absence of maintenance. (TRRL)
