PLANNING A DOWNTOWN PEOPLE MOVER
An overview on aerial guideways which presents unique problems and design considerations for the structural engineer. Guideway types are categorized into three basic support and guidance configurations. The primary function of the guideway is to provide positive support and guidance for the vehicles and resist all loads and forces. Factors affecting the initial design and planning stages are discussed in detail as these are important in determining whether single or double-track systems are utilized. The single most important element in the structural evaluation of guideway types and limitations is column placement. Also presented are special considerations and problems which the guideway designer must cope with. (Authors)
