A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR BONANZA FOR THE RAILROADS: FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATIONS OVER RIGHTS-OF-WAY

In recent years, there have been various suggestions concerning new uses for railroad rights-of-way. Few suggestions, however, offer the huge financial windfall ($200 million to $5 billion annual net revenue) than might accrue to the railroads, including Conrail, from laying fiber optic communication cables over rights-of-way. This article discusses the basics of fiber optic communication technology and offers alternative strategies for the railroad industry to consider in order to reap the predicted financial benefits. The article describes how fiber optic communications would benefit not only the railroads, but also many other industries and eventually lead to productivity increases in transportation and logistics activities and the office worker environment.
