FIRST RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONS ON THE BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS OF HIGHWAY BRIDGES

PREMIERS RESULTATS DE RECHERCHE SUR LES REVETEMENTS HYDROCARBONES DES PONTS ROUTIERS

The bituminous surfacings and waterproofing courses of highway bridges are complex mechanical systems. Their performance is influenced by their design and other factors such as traffic, climatic conditions, properties of materials, interactions between surfacing and deck, and laying conditions. Recent experience shows that the surfacings and waterproofing systems presently used do not give full satisfaction. Consequently one of the investigations conducted at the centre de recherches routieres examines the following problems: design of bituminous bridge surfacings, mechanical and thermal stresses; test methods and characteristics of the materials used in the various layers of the surfacing. This article gives the results of the first stage of the research on the systematic inspection and the setting up of a method of designing bridge surfacings. This method has been devised for the comparative study of several alternative bridge surfacings, the performance of which is examined from the point of view of fatigue cracking and tracking. The last part includes a brief description of vibration measurements. (TRRL)
