MANAGEMENT OF ROAD HAULAGE COMPANIES TROLLEYBUS

FOERETAGSLEDNING I AAKERIFOERETAG

This report deals with conditions, company structures and differences with respect to adoption and learning processes in road haulage companies. The report consists of empirical data collection and theoretical analysis in two parallel phases. The empirical part describes the situation and development of the road haulage industry together with 11 case studies of road haulage companies based on interviews. The conceptual and analyzing part of the report presents a learning process frame of reference and a discussion of the cases in terms of learning processes. The road haulage industry is described in terms of market organization, products and history. The case material consists of two one-lorry hauliers, three midsized hauliers and five one-lorry hauliers who are members of a hauliers co-operative. In a comparative analysis of the cases, the adoption processes of the companies are explained with the concepts of learning processes. Three vital concepts, used in the description of the adoption- and learning processes of the haulage companies, are related to each other in an analysis aimed at explaining the conditions for the function of the learning process. The three concepts and their relations are: (1) structure of haulage company, (2) learning process and (3) strategy of company. The analysis indicates that the learning process is weakened by strategies and structures that conceal market information, techniques and methods for information gathering, analysis, planning from the eyes of the organization. The possibilities of exchanging experiences have a positive influence on the learning process. (TRRL)
