(TRRL) selected system. An underground railway system was selected and in 1968 the semaly (societe d'economie mixte du metropolitain de l'agglomeration lyonnaise) was given the task of carrying out the stage construction of an underground network. The general characteristics are as follows: galleries constructed at a shallow depth hence economical from a civil engineering point of view, stations of simplified design with 70-M long platforms allowing peak traffic flow of 20000 passengers per hour, wide gauge trains consisting of 3 cars with the possibility of adding A trailer. The construction of the underground gave rise to urban developments such as pedestrianized areas and renewed activity of some quarters. The financing of the project is taken care of by the public transport association by means of long-term loans.
